John has had an interest in building and development from the presentation by his dad of his first ever Lego kit at the age of 4.

In 1983, John put his interest in building on a much more secure footing graduating from Dundee with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Quantity Surveying. The first three years following graduation were spent with a Consultant Quantity Surveying Practice in Glasgow which specialised in providing cost and contractual advice to Clients involved with major rehabilitation and renovation projects in and around Glasgow and West of Scotland. In 1986, John completed his professional examinations with the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors to become a Chartered Quantity Surveyor.

Two short adventures abroad followed in Gibraltar and Dubai. John represented both Spanish and UK contractors working on a variety of interesting construction projects in and around the rock. Dubai proved an equally fascinating experience where John was engaged to present contractual claims on one of the first ever motorway projects in the United Arab Emirates between the United Arab Emirates states of Dubai and Al Ain. On his return to UK in Summer of 1988 John decided to undertake further studies at Heriot Watt University in Edinburgh graduating with an MSc in Construction Management (Project Management) (with distinction) in 1989.

London came calling following completion of his studies in Edinburgh and thereafter followed a particularly pleasant period in his career as a Senior Commercial Consultant engaged by Laing Management Contracting to assist with commercial cost control of the construction of the Royal Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, a major development in Central London.

John on marrying his wife Debra in 1994 returned to Scotland for two years before in 1996 being approached by the German contractor Philipp Holzmann AG to assist them to prepare contractual claims on the Xiaolangdi Hyroe-electric Power Dam located on the Yellow River in Central China.

John moving a year later to represent the company as Contracts Manager on the Sunflower Tower Project in Beijing. This proved an absolutely fascinating period in John's career and the couple retain many friends that still live in that amazing and diverse country.

John returned to the UK in 1999 where he ran a successful contract and construction consultancy for seven years representing Contractors, Developers and Private Clients on a diverse range of constructions and civil engineering projects throughout Scotland. During this time John spent a considerable amount of time involved in Adjudications and Arbitrations and during this time passed his examinations for the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and is currently a Chartered Arbitrator.

In 2006, John joined his wife Debra already a successful property investor and author of the book HMOs - The Cash Generators in their Property Investment and Property Development business which continues to thrive.

John given his 30 year background of construction and development is much in demand as a public speaker and among other speaking engagements is a presenter of the Self Build & Development Course with Tigrent Learning, formerly Wealth Intelligence Academy. In addition John has travelled throughout the UK mentoring people in all aspects of the self build process from inception to completion and is currently working on his book 'Self Build - The Essential Guide' which is due to be published in 2010.
